Akshaya Tritiya 2014 or Akha Teej is a Hindu and Jain holy day that will be celebrated on 2nd May 2014 across the nation. It is celebrated as the most auspicious day as per Hindu calendar. Akshaya Tritiya, falls on the third day after Amavasi (no moon) in the Hindu month of Vaishakha. The meaning of the word Akshaya is infinite that which never recede.

Akha Teej is when the sun and moon are equally radiant and bright. This day has many significant mythological events. It is an auspicious day of the birthday of Lord Parasurama who is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On this day, Veda Vyas and Lord Ganesha began to write the Mahabharata. Lord Shiva blessed Kubera with the position of Lord of wealth and property along with Goddess Lakshmi. Goddess Annapurna and God Balram were born on this day. Lord Krishna gifted an ‘Akshaya Patra’ to Pandavas. Akshaya Patra is considered to be the bowl which would never go empty and produce an unlimited supply of food. Maa Ganga originated from divine feet of Lord Vishnu and descended to the earth on this holy day.

The holy Badrinarayana temple opens on this day. Construction of chariots for the Jagannath rath yatra at Puri commences. So the belief is that worshipping Lakshmi-Kubera, buying gold and silver ornaments, investing money in shares and real estate, buying household things, ploughing land, writing new account books on this day - will all bring prosperity.

It is also believed that this day is auspicious and of special significance as it symbolizes purity, hence white payasam, jasmine flowers, kolam or even white vessels are used and made for puja.
